The Kids On The East Side Of Town, Chapter 5, What Have I Done ?

It was dark in the lot, it was cold, it was gloomy, I could use millions of words to describe it. But it was unpleasant, having said that the gang found us and they were looking for a fight . Carter Hudson, the man himself, stood there in the dark, staring at us with his cold eyes that were filled with hatred .

” Go on, look around, what do you see ?, you see ?, you have no where to go ”, Carter threatened .

” Look Carter, what’s your deal ?”, Travis asked, as he was just fed up with everything that Carter put them through .

” Why do you keep stepping on our turf, this is our turf and nobody steps on our turf ”, Carter shouted .

” Your turf ?, what do you mean ?, this is our turf, you are the ones who have to stay away ”, Travis said .

” Don’t try and confront us, it’s not gonna work, I know who you really are, Travis, you may try and sound tough but really, you are just a momma’s boy, a high school drop out and your stupid friends of yours, are blind, they can’t see what you’re really like underneath, but I do, you’re just a piece of junk ”, Jacob said .

” Never, never talk about my mother like that, never ”, Travis shouted, he was fuming with rage inside and he couldn’t keep it in any longer, this was his breaking point .

” All of you are nothing, we are not afraid of Eagles ”, Carter said .

” Is that so, you wanna head out in the back garden, see who’s scared ?”, Jamie asked .

” You have crossed the line, Eagle, thought that I’d give you a second chance, that’s not gonna happen, you have no where to run ”, Carter told him .

” No where to run, no where to hide ”, Jacob said . The gang had a worried look on their faces, I sat on the floor.

” You guys know what an Eagle is ?, white trash with long greasy hair ”, Jacob said and he threw water at me, but I wasn’t happy, I was gonna come back at them, I was gonna shriek havvock back at them with everything that I had, all the dignity and all the resilience and all the aggravation, everything that I had deep inside of me .

” You know what a Reject is ?”, I asked .

” What ?”, Jacob asked .

” White trash with mustangs and cashmere ”, I said, and I spat in his face . All of the Rejects started running all over the place .

” Get him, I think he wants a punch in the stomach ”, Jacob shouted. Then Carter punched me in the stomach, I almost blacked out, it was scary, I was worried that if I didn’t wake up in time, Jacob and Carter would go for my friends, but I just lied on the floor and I was fighting for my life . Then suddenly, I heard a voice, it was Travis .

” Liam ”, he screamed and he also tried to get up and help me, but Carter told him to stay put .

” No, what do you think you’re doing ?, stay there, I’ll take extra care of him ”, Carter said . Johnny also tried to get up and help me but Jacob dragged him down .

” No leave him alone ”, Jacob shouted . Then suddenly, Johnny pulls out his switch blade and ran towards Carter. A few minutes later, everything stopped in time, the lot was quiet, I had woken up from being unconscious . I couldn’t remember much, then I saw Johnny shitting against the wall and he was shivering and wailing and he opened his mouth .

” I killed him ”, Johnny said, as he started sulking .

” You what ?”, I asked .

” I killed him, he was gonna go for you, man, I had no other choice ”, he said, as he was overwhelmed, I also started tearing up . I suddenly felt a slight churn in my stomach, I felt like I was gonna be sick .

” Johnny, I think I’m gonna be sick ”, I said, as I was stumbling around whilst clutching my stomach .

” Go ahead, man, I ain’t gonna look at ya, you do your thing ”, he said. As I went to vomit, I saw Carter’s dead corpse, just lying helplessly on the ground, lifeless .As I stared at his dead body, I thought of all the people and the parents who failed him, why he turned out that way, what drives a person to do the sort of stuff that he’s done, or what made him the most dislikable, horrible person he is . I couldn’t look at it anymore, so I went back to Johnny. After I had gained more consciousness, I had a look around and I had noticed that the gang had vanished .

” Where’s the gang ?”, I asked .

” They all ran off, I tried calling Emmett but he didn’t quite get my call, I guess that they were disturbed by what they saw, but who are they to blame, right Liam ?”, Johnny said .

” I hate this, it’s all changing so fast ”, I said .

” Liam, you don’t get it, I killed him to protect you, if you let him be, you would have never had a chance to live ”, he told me .

” No, things are happening too fast, yesterday, we were hanging around with each other, watching the stars ”, I said .

” Oh, would you just shut up about last night ?, I killed him and you would have died in cold blood, how would you like to live with that, huh ? ”, Johnny shouted and I went to hug him. ” But that’s over now, tomorrow’s another day ”, Johnny added .

” Yeah you’re right ”, I said .

I didn’t know what to feel, I felt my head go slightly funny and my head was throbbing and spinning . I wasn’t sure whether I felt good about Johnny killing Carter, even if he did it to save my life, but I felt very uneasy about the whole thing, even though I hated Carter with the passion, I still felt bad for him, at the end of the day, Carter was just like one of us, he just had a lot of money and wealth, but that doesn’t quite change someone’s human rights, a human is a human, no matter what back round you come from. When we returned home, I told the gang all about what happened to us in the parking lot and they were beyond shell shocked, Jamie just didn’t know what to make of it .

” You killed him ?”, Jamie asked, as he was very shocked .

” Oh yesssss Johnny, that’s what I’m talking about, ruthless, looks like you still have some fire in you after all, this is the only time that you’ve made me proud, just busting your chops, I’m always proud, that bloke is a numpty, he bleeding well deserved it ”, Emmett said .

” Yeah, I had to, he was gonna throttle Liam, I had to make my mind up as fast as I could, Liam’s still got a good few years left, I never wanted to think about him having to cut his life short just because of a Reject ”, Johnny explained .

” Did they hurt you at all ?”, Jamie asked .

” Yeah, they dragged me onto the floor, head first and then they started jumping on me ”, Johnny replied .

” Oh my goodness, are you okay ?, does it still hurt ?”, Jamie asked .

” I think so, it could of been worse, it’s just a bit sore, all the soreness will go away in the morning ”, Johnny replied .

”  How about you, Liam ?, how are you feeling ?”, Jamie asked .

” I don’t know, I may have sprained my ankle, don’t know if it’s broken or not, hopefully it’s nothing serious ”, I replied, as I was stretching .

” Oh ok ”, Jamie said .

” Did you tell them about that thing ?”, Dominick asked .

” What thing ?”, Jamie asked .

” You remember that thing, about the, oh you know what, never mind, I’ll just tell him ”, Dominick said .

” No it’s ok, I’ll tell him, ok so, tomorrow, we’re gonna go on a car trip together, all of us, how does that sound ?”, Jamie asked .

” I don’t know, man, I just had to go through a witnessing of a murder, don’t think that’s something  that I’d have on my mind  at the moment ”, I replied, I was quite disturbed from that night and I was trying to give him an honest answer .

” Oh come on Liam, it’ll be fun, we can go and have a chat, and maybe we’ll catch a sunset, there are hundreds of places that we haven’t even explored yet, it’ll be great ”, Jamie kept on convincing me, and it just got to a point where I ran out of excuses, so I just agreed, there’s no way that I could let Jamie down, he just has that charm, you know, like how can you say no to him .

” Alright, I’ll come ”, I said .

” Great ”, Jamie replied . ” Now why don’t you go and get some sleep, the world will be calling out to you in the morning, get ready for the big day ”, he added .

” Alright, I’ll go upstairs, I’m gonna have an early start, I’m exausted ”, I said .

” Goodnight ”, everyone said. And I went upstairs to get some rest . Everybody was happy and they couldn’t wait to go on the car trip and I can’t blame them, to be honest, even though, I was tired, half battered and bogged down, I still felt enthusiastic . At least I had some enthusiasm, cause, oh boy oh boy, do we need enthusiasm in these times, you betcha .

” Car trip, here we come ”
