The Kids On The East Side Of Town, Chapter 4, Against The Odds

In Hackney, 1976, it was an easy morning. I felt great, I was in the sitting room, talking to Emmett. Travis was also in the room, he kind of overslept .

” Good morning, Emmett, How’s it going ?”, I asked .

” Yeah not too bad, you ?”, Emmett asked .

” Yeah not too bad either ”, I replied, while I was rubbing my eyes from yawning. Then suddenly, Johnny came running in the room, like a devil was after him .

” Aww shit ”, Johnny cried .

” What’s wrong ?”, Emmett asked .

” I don’t know, Emmett, I woke up and I saw a reflection of Carter and Jacob, piercing inside the window ”, he said, as he started panicking .

” Oh not again, I thought that we already dealt with them, did they come back from the dead or something ?”, Emmett asked .

” I don’t know, man, remember yesterday, when they vandalized our door, that’s a sign, something tells me that they’re not finished yet, I don’t know man, it’s not looking too good, whatever it is, it’s not looking too good ”, I replied . ” It’s gonna be alright, Johnny, you’re gonna be alright, ok, we’re gonna sort it out ”, I said, as I assured Johnny that everything was gonna be ok . Travis suddenly ran outside, shouting, I ran after him as fast as I could, he started talking to himself .

” Why, why does this have to happen to us, just why ?”, he told himself, as he was really upset . I ran out, by the time I finally caught up, he was already sitting on a bench .

” Hey Travis, wait up ”, I shouted. ” Where do you think you’re going ?”, I asked .

” It’s too much ”, he replied, as he spoke under his breath .

” Wait, you’re not thinking of leaving, aren’t you ?”, I asked .

” Well, what else am I supposed to do, they’ll always find a way to come back at us ”, he said .

” I know, but we need you here with us, the gang wouldn’t be the same without you, I mean, what is The Eagles without Travis ?”, I said .

” Liam, I don’t think you understand, if we stay, they’ll kill us, I don’t think I’m ready to die yet ”, he told me .

” We are not gonna die, we’ll live and if we die, we’ll die together, cause we are The Eagles, Eagles never say die ”, I told him. The emotion got to Travis and we started tearing up .

” We can’t live like this, there’s got to be something ”, he said, then Johnny heard us, he ran outside to join us .

” What’s going on here, why are you ?”, he asked .

” We’re just having a chat ”, I replied .

” Johnny, what do you think we should do ?”, Travis asked .

” We’ll be ok, I promise, we are not gonna let them get the best of us ”, Johnny replied .

” How can you keep such a promise ?, you can’t predict survival or death, or never waking up ”, Travis said .

” We’ll always be ok, nothing can touch us ”, Johnny said .

” Don’t they scare you, you seem to be quite calm about it ”, Travis asked .

” Trust me, it’s not what you think, I am scared, but we just have to hope and pray that we’ll come through and I know that’s for sure ”, Johnny replied .

” But you don’t understand, they almost killed you, if it wasn’t for us, you wouldn’t of had a morning to wake up to ”, Travis said .

”I know, what’s their deal, why do they come at us so much ?”, Johnny asked .

” I don’t know, it happens when people get too big for their boots, or that they’ve suffered a lot of pain in their lives and they just want to unload it all onto somebody else, make their lives a misery, especially with these kids, you can see it straight away, but just because we have labels, it doesn’t mean that we’re different, we’re all human, we experience the same things every single day ”, I said .

” I guess that one of us just has to be the bigger person, probably all of us ” Travis said with a sigh .

” Yeah ”, Johnny said. Then suddenly, Kevin, Dominick, Emmett and Jamie walked outside .

” What’s going on out here ?”, Jamie asked .

” Is everything ok ?”, Dominick asked .

” You enjoying the cold weather, huh ?, bloody blizzard ”, Emmett said .

” Why are you all sitting down like this, you could all just come inside, you know ?”, Kevin asked .

” Yeah I know, we’re fine ”, I replied .

” Emmett, do you think that we’ll be fine ?”, Johnny asked .

” Why are you asking me this question, is everything okay ?”, Emmett asked, as he felt confused .

” Just so you know ”, Johnny replied .

” Know what ?, but I don’t understand, you usually never ask these sorts of questions ”, Emmett said .

” What’s going on, Johnny ?, I need answers ”, Dominick said .

” Do you think that we’ll come through ?”, Johnny asked, once again .

” Johnny, what’s going on ?, talk to me ”, Jamie asked, suspiciously, as he tried to get his attention and they turned around and saw Carter and Jacob standing right behind them .

” Oh shit ”, Johnny whispered, he was totally shell shocked .

” Ohh, I smell a rumble ”, Emmett said .

” Hello Johnny Boy ”, Carter said, with a sinister laugh .
