Le Boucher

Hi everyone, welcome back to Big Blog Theory, I hope you’re all doing well. Today I thought I would talk about a film I just very recently watched, it’s called Le Boucher, but in English it’s translated into The Butcher, it’s an old French supernatural horror film from the late sixties early seventies about this man who is a butcher and he becomes acquainted with this woman who’s a headmistress at this school and there are all these kind of murders taking place in this little French town. I don’t want to give away too many spoilers but it was something else.  It’s only an hour and a half but within that time we were both just lost in this magnificent film and story. If I could I’d go back and watch it again, I’m not even kidding, it really took us on a journey.

My dad was telling me about this film that he saw when he was a kid and remembered very little of the plot or what the film actually was, he only remembered the one scene where, spoilers, these kids are having a picnic and all of the sudden, blood starts dripping down and then you look up and you see someone’s hand on the cliff. This scene always stuck in his mind and it sort of disturbed him as a kid but he had no idea which film it came from, so a few years on, he was on this scavenger hunt to try and track this film down, sort of drove him mad, so when he found it he was so happy. We found a version with English subtitles and we watched it together as a family last night and we all absolutely loved it, we were so intrigued. It was such a fantastic film, probably one of the best films I’ve watched in a very long time. It was very mysterious and you just wanted to know what happened next.

I loved the way it was shot, I think the cast were all wonderful and it had us on the edges of our seats. A very thrilling psychological film from a bygone era of cinema.

We were thinking maybe it could have either been And Soon The Darkness [1971} or Picnic At Hanging Rock 1975 which are both wonderful films too, they used to show those two films around the same time, but we found it was actually neither of them. Anyway, I’m so glad we found it because it was a wonderful film and it’s become one of my favourites.

Recently me and my family, we’ve become re acquainted with foreign films. Foreign films are absolutely incredible, I do love foreign films, I just love the way they tell stories from all around the world, they really take you away and open your eyes to different cultures. This film has encouraged me to watch more foreign films. I totally recommend this film to anyone who’s new to the world of foreign films, it seems like a very good introduction and once you watch this film I think you’ll be consuming them more and more, which is what I’m excited to do myself.

That’s all for this post, I hope you liked it, have a nice day wherever you are, I love you guys, stay tuned for more work on Big Blog Theory
